After our last trip to Japan with our team members we stopped by the Ippodo tea company located in the heart of Kyoto. Through dozens of matcha tastings we fell in love with their ‘Ikuyo-no-Mukashi’ grade.
For those who want a taste of fine matcha. Ikuyo-no-mukashi is an excellent choice. With enough umami to represent the true character of matcha tea.
Ground from shade-cultivated tea leaves, matcha is rich in theanine and amino acid responsible for matcha‘s full-bodied mellow sweetness. In Japan, there is a special name for this taste: umami. Generally, the higher the grade, the richer the umami taste.
Characterized by its rich aroma, full-bodied mellow sweetness, and vivid green color, matcha is a favorite among tea lovers in Japan. Invigorating and full of nutrients, matcha is the perfect drink to rejuvenate your mind and body. It tastes best when served with sweets made with “Adzuki” red beans or lychee.

Ippodo has been providing the highest quality Japanese green tea for over 3 centuries. More than just a retailer, Ippodo is a multi-faceted tea company directly involved in the procurement and blending of carefully selected tea leaves. Their teas are of the finest class, cultivated in the lush fields of Kyoto and the surrounding area. This region is renowned for producing the highest grade of green tea in Japan, thanks largely to its mild misty climate, mineral-rich soil and near-perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall.
Just as tea is blessed by Mother Nature, it is subject to her varying weather patterns. Overcoming these variations is a major hurdle for tea producers trying to provide a consistent flavor. Yet, providing a consistent flavor is Ippodo’s forte. Drawing on over 300 years of expertise in blending, Ippodo is famous among its patrons for providing a high quality taste that is consistent not only throughout the year but from year to year. The aim is to ensure that the trademark taste – the taste that matcha lovers know and love – is inside every package that leaves our plant.

This matcha was named by Hounsai Sosho XV, the great grand master of the Ura-Senke family of tea masters and this grade of matcha is the same as that used for Kimmo-no-mukashi, which was named by the Omote-Senke family of tea masters.
